Petrilla Reaches Finals at MASCAC Individual Championships

Sophomore Christine Petrilla reached the finals of the #2 singles flight at the MASCAC Individual Championships.

Wilkes-Barre, PA (October 25, 2009) – Sophomore #Christine Petrilla# (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert-Hamilton East) had a terrific weekend reaching the Championship match of the #2 singles flight as the DeSales University women's tennis team competed at the MASCAC Individual Championships on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Rain forced most of the weekend matches indoors on Friday and Saturday as the tournament finished up on Sunday on a beautiful fall afternoon.

In the singles matches Petrilla led the way winning three matches to reach the finals where she fell to Katrina Lynn of Wilkes University, 6-2, 6-0. In the opening round she defeated Stacey Clark of Messiah College, 8-5, topped Nell Kucich of Manhattanville College, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) in the quarterfinals and was a 6-3, 6-4 winner of Shayna Heintzelman of Lebanon Valley College in the semifinals.

Junior #Kate Steiner# (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) also had a strong weekend as she advanced to the semifinals of the #1 singles flight with a first round win over Lisa Archibald of King's College, 8-0, and a quarterfinal win over Abby Searfoss of Misericordia University, 6-2, 6-2. Steiner dropped her semifinal match-up to Melanie Nolt of Wilkes University, 6-2, 6-4.

In the #3 singles flight, sophomore #Krista Damirgian# (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) lost in the opening round, 8-3, to Christy Rossowski of King's College, while freshman #Ariane Cain# (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) was an 8-6 first round winner over Kelly Drinkard of Lebanon Valley College in the first round before falling in the quarterfinals to Annie Gotchel of Messiah College, 6-4, 6-4.

In the #5 singles flight junior #Amelia Lloyd# (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) was a first round winner, 8-6, over Caitlin Bedford of Lebanon Valley College, but was defeated in the quarterfinals to Lauren Breen of King's College, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman #Marissa Williams# (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) rounded out the singles action with an 8-1 loss in the first round to Joeliza Valdez of Manhattanville College at the #6 flight.

In doubles action Steiner and Petrilla teamed for an 8-4 first round over Cynthia Darby and Jillian Talarico of King's College but fell in the quartefinals, 8-2 to Jess Russell and Emily Swarr of Elizabethtown College at the #1 flight. In the #2 flight, Damirgian and Cain fell to Kristen Chen and Gotchel of Messiah College, 8-2, while Lloyd and Williams dropped a first round match-up in the #3 flight, 8-0, to Melissa DeBello and Irina Samson of Arcadia University.
