Men's Track & Field Finishes Third at MAC Championships

Sophomore Ken Devens was third in the discus and hammer throw at the MAC Championships on Friday and Saturday.
Elizabethtown, PA (May 2, 2009) – The DeSales University men’s track and field team had several athletes enjoy success on Friday and Saturday leading the Bulldogs to a third place finish out of nine teams at the MAC Championships hosted by Elizabethtown College.

Among the top finishers was junior Justin Del Piano (Monmouth Junction, NJ/South Brunswick) taking first place in the decathlon with 5,756 points. Senior Jeremy Morse (Ashland, MA/Ashland) was also among the top eight in the decathlon, taking fourth with 5,101 points and sophomore Pat Dougherty (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven) was eighth with 4,145 points.

Del Piano added an eighth place finish in the pole vault (12-00.00) and in the high jump freshman Andrew MacNiven (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) was fourth (6-02.00) and Morse was seventh (6-00.00). In the discus, freshman Hank Miller (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) was second (134-04.00) and freshman Ken Devens (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) was third (129-10.00), while junior Steve Modrow (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) took seventh (123-03.00).

Modrow was also among the top eight in the shot put, taking sixth (43-20.50), while MacNiven was fifth in the triple jump (42-06.00). In the 10,000-meter run sophomore Kevin Gwinn (Center Muriches, NY/Saint Anthony’s) was fifth in a time of 33:24.29. Sophomore Mike Curry (Kennett Square, PA/Salesianum) was fourth in the steeplechase in a time of 10:03.60, joining junior Andrew Ferretti (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) in fifth place (10:07.06) and junior Justin Cuga (Newark, DE/Salesianum) in eighth place (10:15.70).

In the 110-meter hurdles, senior Pat Brophy (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown) was fifth (16.95). Sophomore Pete Moreni (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was third in the 400-meter dash (50.53) and Eric Yeager (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) was fourth (50.81).

In the 800-meter run, sophomore Paul Ecker (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) was fifth (1:55.51), freshman Brent Clauser (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) was sixth (1:55.67), and sophomore Brian Filanowski (Cumbola, PA/Marian Catholic) was eighth (2:05.01). Moreni continued his stellar day with a first place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (56.40).

Rounding out the top finishers was MacNiven in the long jump (6th – 20-03.50), Devens in the hammer throw (3rd – 146-06.00), Del Piano in the javelin (3rd – 184-11.00), freshman James DePalma (Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic) in the javelin (7th – 172-04.00), and Curry in the 5,000-meters (2nd – 15:26.63).

DSU returns to action on Monday, May 11th when they travel to the Last Chance meet at Swarthmore College.
