Cana Has Strong Showing at ITA Southeast Regional Championships

Junior Yllka Cana advanced to the semifinals of the Blue 5 singles bracket over the weekend.
Fredericksburg, VA (September 26, 2009) – Junior Yllka Cana (Allentown, PA/William Allen) had a strong showing as the DeSales University women's tennis team traveled down to Mary Washington College over the weekend to compete in the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.

All six of the Bulldogs competed in both singles and doubles during the event with Cana fairing the best. She advanced all the way to the semifinals of the Blue 5 Singles bracket with wins over Miranda Donovan of Bridgewater College, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) and Kim Naylor of Roanoke College, 6-2, 6-1. She eventually lost in the semi's to Martha Vlahakis of Randolph-Macon College, 6-0, 6-1.

In the other singles tournaments, junior Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) was eliminated in the opening round, 6-0, 6-0, by the number three seed, Rachel Wallwork of Swarthmore College and sophomore Christine Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert-Hamilton East) fell, 6-1, 6-3 in the opening round and 8-0 in the consolation match.

In the Blue 2 singles, sophomore Krista Damirgian (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) fell 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round and 8-3 in the consolation. Freshman Ariane Cain (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) was a 6-3, 6-1 loser in the Blue 3 singles opening round, while junior Amelia Lloyd (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) fell 6-2, 6-1 in the Blue 4 singles first round and 8-5 in the consolation.

In doubles action, Steiner and Petrilla dropped two matches, 8-1 and 8-5, Damirgian and Cain fell 8-2 in the opening round, and Cana and Lloyd lost 8-0 in the first round and 8-5 in the consolation.

DSU returns to action on Tuesday, September 29th when they host Manhattanville College for a Freedom Conference match beginning at 3:30 pm.
