Petrilla/Chiovitti Named to CoSida/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team

Center Valley, PA (May 13, 2010) – Sophomore Christine Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and sophomore Nick Chiovitti (Thomaston, CT/Holy Cross) of the DeSales University softball and baseball team were each honored by being named to the CoSida/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team as announced early this week by the Academic All-America® Committee.

The CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team recognizes student-athletes of sophomore status or higher that excel in both the classroom (3.3 GPA or higher) and on the court (starter or significant reserve). All student-athletes recognized on an All-District First-Team are then forwarded to the national ballot where they will be considered for Academic All-American status.

Petrilla earned Third-Team honors having a tremendous year for the Bulldogs who are currently 25-19 and among the final four teams in the ECAC South Region Tournament this weekend. She is second on the team with a .351 batting average and has shattered the school-record for doubles in a season with 18 thus far. Petrilla also has four home runs and has knocked in 21 runs.

She has also performed well in the circle posting a 6-3 record with a team-low 2.27 ERA in 77 innings pitched. Opponents are batting just .268 off her this season. Petrilla is a History secondary education major with a cumulative GPA of 3.73.

Chiovitti had a breakout season for the Bulldogs who currently sit with a 25-17 overall record and await a possible NCAA Tournament at-large bid this coming Monday. He is batting .337 with 32 runs scored and a .457 on-base percentage, which ranks fourth on the team. Chiovitti earned Second-Team honors as a sport & exercise science major with a 3.71 cumulative GPA.
