Center Valley, PA (May 27, 2010) – Four DeSales University baseball players including senior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) were honored earlier this week being named to the 2010 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team as announced by the organization at the start of the week.
Among the honorees were Moyer who was named to the First-Team and was also honored as the 2010 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove at third base as the best fielding third baseman in the region. Junior Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) was also honored on the First-Team, freshman David Drinks (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) was honored on the Second-Team, and junior Carson Slonaker (East Greenville, PA/The Perkiomen School) was named to the Third-Team. The All-Region honor is the first for all four Bulldogs.
Moyer had another terrific season at third base batting a team-best .439 and was the team leader in hits (69) and runs scored (53). He also belted eight home runs, knocked in 48 runs, struck out just eight times in 178 plate appearances and stole 9-of-10 bases. Defensively Moyer was second to none with a .962 fielding percentage making just five errors in 132 chances at the hot corner.
Newland had a breakout season particularly in the power department where he batted .367 with a school-record 15 home runs this season. Newland also had a team-high four triples and posted a team-best .762 slugging percentage as a starter in the outfield. He ranked second on the team with 48 RBIs and belted two grand slams in the opening round win over King's College in the Freedom Conference playoffs.
Drinks, who earlier this off-season became the first Bulldog since 2005 to earn Freedom Conference Pitcher of the Year honors and the first DSU player to earn Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year honors since 2007, was a dominant force on the mound this season posting an 8-1 overall record with a 2.93 ERA in a team-high 73.2 innings pitched. Drinks struck out 50 and walked just 18 and opponent's batted just .235 off him during the season. He had two complete-games and one shutout on the year.
Slonaker had a terrific junior season as a full-time starter. He batted .419 with 62 hits and a team-high 55 RBIs. Slonaker also broke the school-record with 22 doubles, one more than the previous record held by Mike Cohan, and stole seven bases.
