Annville, PA (April 5, 2011) – Senior
Mike Curry of the DeSales University men's track & field team was honored on Tuesday morning by the MAC Conference office being named the 2010-11 Men's Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete. The MAC picks one deserving student-athlete from each sport combining candidates from institutions in both the Freedom and Commonwealth conferences weighing academics and athletics excellence as well as the nominee's involvement within the community.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete award started during the 2000-01 academic year and for the first five years was given to just one student-athlete per season and per gender. In 2005-06 the MAC Conference moved to naming a Scholar-Athlete in each sport. Curry becomes the eighth DeSales student-athlete to earn the award and the third men's cross country and track & field athlete, following
Andrew Ferretti and
Justin Cuga, who each took home the honor in 2009-10 in cross country and outdoor track and field.
To be nominated you must be a senior and must have at least a 3.20 GPA or higher. Points are awarded to each nominee based on their cumulative GPA and their athletics excellence, while also factoring in the nominee's involvement within the community.
A six-time member of the MAC Fall, Winter, and Spring Academic Honor Roll, Curry currently carries a 3.52 cumulative GPA as a double major in computer science and mathematics.
In addition to his excellent work in the classroom, Curry is a standout on the men's cross country and track & field team. This season he placed 14th at the MAC Cross Country Championships, his first top 20 finish at the MAC Championships in his career in cross country. Also this season at the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships he placed first in the 5,000-meters taking home the 5,000 title at the MAC Indoor Championships for the second straight year.
Curry also won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the MAC Outdoor Championships in 2010 and has finished second in the 5,000-meters at the MAC Outdoor Championships each of the last two seasons.
