Center Valley, PA (February 1, 2012) – For the second time this season the DeSales University women's basketball team defeated Delaware Valley College in the final seconds with sophomore Sondrine Glovas serving as the hero this time with two free throws with 0.7 seconds left, breaking a tie at 62, for a 64-62 win over the Aggies in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday night in Billera Hall.

Earlier in the season, sophomore Alexiah Grant was the hero, hitting a running lay-up as time expired in James Work Gymnasium to give DSU a two-point win that afternoon.  Tonight it was Glovas who took a pass from senior Hannah Smith in the left corner and let go on a jumper just inside the three-point line that was off the mark but Glovas was run into by a charging Aggie defender on her follow thru and was sent to the line where she netted both freebies.

The Bulldogs (11-9, 6-3 Freedom) had to fight from behind all night once again, overcoming a 32.9 percent shooting performance by taking excellent care of the ball (12 turnovers), producing 16 more shots than Delaware Valley (12-8, 3-6 Freedom), who committed 23 turnovers.

DSU found themselves trailing by seven (54-47) with just under 10 minutes left before a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three from Glovas, tied the game at 54 with 7:03 left.  The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes before DVC led by two (62-60) after one Glovas free throw with 3:16 to go.

Both teams missed opportunities over the next 2:46 as the Bulldogs could not connect on several open looks to tie the game and the Aggies were unable to distance themselves, including two missed free throws with under a minute to play giving DeSales life.

Senior Cherelle Simmons tied the game with 30 seconds left on a mid-range jumper in the lane and DVC called timeout with 22 ticks left to set-up the final play.  A turnover by the Aggies gave DSU possession with 3.9 left but needing to travel the length of the court.

Head coach Fred Richter called timeout and asked sophomore Megan Gallagher if she was OK to throw a long pass.  Gallagher was on the bench for the entire second-half after a shoulder injury to her non-throwing shoulder occurred in the first-half.  Gallagher said yes.

Gallagher then delivered a perfect over the top strike to a streaking Smith, who dribbled into the lane, drawing the Aggie defense in just enough before finding Glovas all alone in the left corner as the hard charging Aggie defender tried to recover but ran into Glovas as she let go on the shot, sending the sophomore to the line for the game-winning free throws.

Despite shooting just 32.9 percent for the game, DSU started the game on fire, hitting seven of its first 10 shots to lead by as many as five points in the opening half.  The Bulldogs then went cold, hitting just five of their last 29 attempts in the half as Delaware Valley enjoyed a 32-27 halftime edge.

Glovas finished with a team-high 17 points and added six rebounds, while Grant (13 points) and junior Colleen Gavin (12 points) also reached double digits.  Gavin also pulled down nine rebounds, had three assists, and three steals in the win.  Simmons finished with nine points and eight boards, freshman Alex Suk had a strong game off the bench with nine points and nine rebounds, and Smith totaled five assists and three steals for the Bulldogs.

Junior Emily Soper led the Aggies with a double-double line of 20 points and 11 rebounds, senior Brittany Battinieri and freshman Brenna Coll each totaled 12 points and freshman Grace Mirack added 10 points in the loss.

The Bulldogs are now 11-1 this season when they score 60+ points in a game.  DSU returns to action on Saturday when they host Misericordia University in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 1:00 pm as part of the annual “Pink Zone” game.  All proceeds for the game and all donations collected during the game will go directly to Cancer research.
