Center Valley, PA (October 19, 2013) – Wilkes broke a tie at one with a tally at 86:12 lifting the Colonels to a 2-1 win over the DeSales University men's soccer team in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 7-9 overall and 1-3 in the Freedom Conference, while Wilkes improves to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the Freedom. Wilkes enjoyed a slim edge in shots (14-12) as well as corner kicks (5-4).
WU got on the board first when
Tyler Young headed home a header from
Jim Moran off a long throw from Geoffrey Arentz at 15:41.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the 27th minute when sophomore
John Kilduff scored his first goal of the season off a header in the box from senior
Brett Morris that bounced over a defender's head to Kilduff who was all alone and tapped a shot low inside the left post just under the goalkeepers hand.
The score remained tied into the half and for most of the second-half before Wilkes found the game-winner in the 87th minute.
Michael Turner sent a shot in that was saved by freshman
Ryan O'Neill but not secured and
John Stoner was in the right spot, flicking the rebound high inside the near post and over O'Neill on the rebound giving Wilkes the 2-1 lead and eventually the win as DSU could not find the tying tally in the final four minutes.
O'Neill finished the game with five saves in his first career start in between the pipes.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Misericordia University for another Freedom Conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
