Center Valley, PA (August 31, 2013) – Rutgers-Camden scored on two penalty kicks in the second-half and fought back from down one goal twice to earn a 4-3 win over the Bulldogs in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.
DSU (0-2) took a 1-0 lead just 2:02 into the game when senior
Matt Poorman took advantage of a Scarlet Raptor mistake, taking control of a turnover that turned into a 1-v-1 with Rutgers-Camden keeper as he beat him low to the right side for the game's first goal.
That lead stood for just under 10 minutes as Camden tied the contest at one at 12:01 when
Mike Ryan scored off an assist from
Joe Auleta.
The game remained tied at one entering the half with the Scarlet Raptors holding an 11-1 advantage in shots.
DSU regained the lead 4:54 into the second-half when freshman
Alex Peek sent a centering pass into the box where fellow freshman
Wes Frebel leaped high into the air and headed home a shot into the left corner of the net.
That lead stood into the 58th minute when Camden again tied the match as Ryan again scored, this time being in the right spot at the right time firing a shot into a wide open net after Auleta had attempted to dribbled around the Bulldog keeper but had the ball knocked away and it went right to Ryan for the shot.
Just four minutes later
Mitch Grotti drew a foul in the box and was awarded a PK, firing a shot past junior
Colin Sulpizio to give the Scarlet Raptors their first lead of the game, 3-2.
This time DSU countered as a hand ball was called in the 71st minute in the box and Poorman scored low and to the right once again on the PK to tie the game at three.
The game remained tied into the 84th minute when Grotti again scored on a PK after Sulpizio gambled and came way off his line in attempt to gather a long pass but was beaten on the play and took down the offensive player in the box after he had beaten him to the ball, drawing a red card and the game-winning penalty kick.
Camden finished the game with a 27-7 advantage in shots and a 6-4 lead in corner kicks. Sulpizio made seven saves in between the pipes for the Bulldogs.
DSU returns to action next Saturday when they travel to Drew University for a non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
