Center Valley, PA (September 24, 2013) – Freshman
Wes Frebel scored his fourth goal of the season on a blast from about 19 yards out in the 60th minute leading the DeSales University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over local rival Muhlenberg College on Tuesday afternoon.
The win (5-4) is the fifth straight for the Bulldogs after they started the season 0-4. It is also just the third win over Muhlenberg in 21 career meetings and snaps MC's five-game winning streak in the series.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Mules out-shoot the Bulldogs, 8-2, DSU struck first at 59:37. Sophomore
Nick Ciarleglio sent a long pass over the top to a streaking Frebel who had a step on the Muhlenberg defense.
Frebel took the ball into him as the Mule defenders momentum carried them past the ball, took two touches and fired a laser into the left corner of the net for the game's first and only score.
Muhlenberg immediately pushed up its offense with the hopes of tying the game but the Bulldog defense stood tall and junior
Colin Sulpizio came up with three big second-half saves, none bigger than his last at 84:06 when MC's
Bucky Aronoff sent in a rocket from about 25 yards that Sulpizio got in the way of and just deflected it over the bar.
It was Sulpizio's second shutout of the season as Muhlenberg finished with a 22-5 edge in shots for the game and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
DSU will put its five-game winning streak on the line on Saturday as the Bulldogs host Lebanon Valley College on homecoming beginning at 3:30 pm.
