West Lawn, PA (May 8, 2015) – The DeSales University baseball team scored eight runs in the second inning breaking open a scoreless tie en route to a 9-1 win over Eastern University on Friday evening at Owls Field.
The win moves the Bulldogs (27-16) into the Freedom Conference championship game tomorrow at Noon vs. Misericordia University, a 2-0 winner over Eastern also on Friday. DSU will need to beat the Cougars twice to take home the Freedom Conference crown.
This game was in hand early as the Bulldogs sent 12 men to the plate in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead and never looked back from there.
Freshman
Conner Lafferty started it all with a leadoff single to left center. Junior
Carlos Urena followed with a single thru the left side to put runners on the corners until Urena stole second to put two runners in scoring position.
Sophomore
Danny Licamara hit a pop fly to shallow right field that the second baseman seemed camped under but he was called off by the right fielder who never got to the ball as Lafferty raced home to make it 1-0.
Senior
Nick Fischer laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and reached base when the pitcher's throw went high as Urena scored and Licamara advanced to third on the play.
Senior
Drew Borger was hit by a pitch loading the bases and sophomore
Tyler Sweeney knocked in Licamara with a base hit to left field.
Sophomore
Tommy DePaul grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Fischer and DePaul and Borger each moved up one bag, Borger scoring, on an errant throw by the shortstop trying to double up DePaul.
Junior
Colby Kulig followed with a bunt single and junior
Alec Hardy singled to center field scoring scoring DePaul. Lafferty then knocked in Hardy with a triple down the right field line and scored on a double by Urena down the left field line to put the exclamation point on the inning.
DSU added another run in the third on one hit, an Eagle error, and a wild pitch and Eastern (16-24) got its lone run in the fourth to provide the final tally.
Sophomore
Andrew Schuler was outstanding on the bump tossing his third complete-game of the year allowing just four hits and striking out 10. Schuler also only walked one batter.
Urena continued to swing a hot bat going 4-for-4 as did Lafferty going 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Kulig, Hardy, and Sweeney also had two hits as all nine starters either had a hit or scored a run in the win.
