West Lawn, PA (May 9, 2015) – Junior
Steven Wallace tossed a three-hit complete game shutout helping the DeSales University baseball team force a winner take all championship game with a 1-0 win over Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon at Owls Field.
This game was a true pitcher's duel as Wallace allowed just seven base runners all game and only three to reach second or third base. The Cougars (28-11) had lead off runners in the first, fifth, and seventh innings but were never able to get a run home.
The Bulldogs had a chance to score in the fifth with runners on first and second and two outs but sophomore
Tyler Sweeney lined out to right field to end the threat.
DSU finally broke thru in the top of the ninth as sophomore
Jesse Smoot singled up the middle to lead off the inning, stole second base, and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Cougar catcher.
After two consecutive ground outs kept Smoot at third base, freshman
Conner Lafferty hit a ground ball to shortstop but the MU first baseman dropped the throw from the SS as Smoot scampered home with the game's lone run.
Wallace struck out five to earn his fifth win of the year. Smoot, Lafferty, and junior
Carlos Urena had DSU's three hits in the win.
