Adam Donovan pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings and the DeSales University baseball team broke it open late advancing into the winner's bracket with a 9-1 win over King's College in the first game of the MAC Freedom Tournament at Owls Field.
A scoreless game into the third inning saw the Bulldogs take a 1-0 lead when junior
Aaron Fritz hit a bomb to centerfield just left of the 415 sign for his fourth home run of the season, a half inning after King's left the bases loaded.
After both teams went quietly in the fourth inning, the Monarchs loaded the bases in the fifth with one out on two walks and a single but were left emtpy handed as freshman
Cody Mish made a leaping catch of a hard line drive to shortstop and doubled up the runner on second base to end the threat.
In the bottom half of the fifth the Bulldogs broke the game open taking advantage of two Monarch errors and a two-RBI double from freshman
Sean Hanczaryk to take a 5-0 lead.
The lead was extended to 9-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Hanczaryk had an RBI single, senior
Conner Lafferty a two-RBI double, and sophomore
Sergio Diaz an RBI triple.
Hanczaryk finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs and Fritz was 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the offense.
Donovan earned the win, his fifth of the season, striking out four and allowing just four hits over 6 1/3 frames.
The Bulldogs await the winner of the other opening day winner (Misericorida or Wilkes) in the 11:00 am game on Saturday morning.
