Annville, PA (May 4, 2009) – Freshman Katie Morrissey (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) was named the Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year highlighting seven Bulldogs who were honored on the All-Freedom Conference First and Second-Teams as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon and as voted on by the nine Freedom Conference coaches.
Morrissey becomes the second player in as many years to earn Rookie of the Year honors after sophomore Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) was named the ROY last season. Morrissey was also named to the All-Freedom Conference First-Team. Joining her on the First-Team were sophomore Kristin Schultz (Laurys Station, PA/Parkland), senior Jamie Pfitzenmayer (Annandale, NJ/Hunterdon Central), and senior Kelly Moran (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic). Honored on the All-Conference Second-Team were Lococo, sophomore Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton), and senior Amanda Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty).
Morrissey had a terrific first season as a Bulldog posting a 14-6 overall record with a 1.96 ERA in a team-high 139.1 innings pitched. Her 14 wins rank as the second most in a season in school history, while her 133 strikeouts on the season rank as the third most. Morrissey becomes just the second player to record 100+ K’s in a season, joining DSU Hall of Famer Jamie Bicking who did it twice during her career.
Pfitzenmayer had a tremendous senior season at the plate and in centerfield. A terrific defensive outfielder, she made lots of noise at the plate this season batting a team-high .420 with a school-record 60 hits, breaking the old mark of 58 set by Jackie Fasolka. Pfitzenmayer also totaled team-highs of 37 runs scored, 11 doubles, six triples, and five stolen bases. This honor marks the second time she has been named All-Conference after earned Second-Team honors as a junior.
Rounding out the All-Conference First-Team honorees are Moran and Schultz. Moran makes her second straight appearance on the First-Team after batting .316 with a team-high five home runs and knocking in 26 runs. She finishes her career as the all-time leader in home runs with 20. Schultz makes her first appearance on the All-Conference team after batting .280 with one home run and 12 RBI’s. She made just three errors in 227 chances behind home plate for a .987 fielding percentage on the season.
Lococo earns Second-Team honors at first base after earning First-Team honors as a pitcher last season. She had an outstanding year both at the plate and in the circle once again this season. At the plate she batted .390 with 48 hits and a team-high 29 RBI’s. She had a team-high 15 walks and posted a .448 on-base percentage. In the circle, Lococo was once again terrific posting a 10-7 record with a 2.16 ERA. She struck out 64 over 103.2 innings pitched and equaled Morrissey’s team-high of three shutouts on the year.
Kensecki earns Second-Team honors for the second straight season having garnered a .321 batting average with 44 hits, 22 runs scored, seven doubles, and 21 RBI’s. She led the team with eight outfield assists. Steiner makes her first appearance on the All-Conference team after posting a .294 battting average. She ranked second on the team with 30 runs scored and two home runs, while ranking third on the squad with 24 RBI’s.
The Bulldogs (25-15 overall) finish the season with 25+ wins for the second straight year and as only the third team in school history to win 25+ games.
