McCauley Pitches Bulldogs into Freedom Title Game

Wilkes-Barre, PA (May 1, 2015) – Junior DJ McCauley fired her second straight complete game pitching out of jams in the final three innings as the DeSales University softball team moves into the Freedom Conference Championship game with a 3-2 win over Eastern University on Friday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (16-13) will play the winner of Eastern/Misericordia tomorrow morning with the championship game set to begin around 1:00 pm.

DSU took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore Alexa Beaumont singled home junior Michelle Gessner and senior Carly Bartholomew hit a sacrifice fly scoring junior DJ McCauley.

Eastern (16-18) tied the game at two in the fourth inning on a two-run double from Kelsey Clever but the Bulldogs quickly re-took the lead on an RBI groundout from senior Kayla Adanalian in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring freshman Haley Frati.

Eastern loaded the bases in the fifth inning with no one out but McCauley got a shallow fly out to right field, a strikeout, and a ground out to end the threat.

The Eagles again threatened in the sixth inning and seemed to have tied the game on a line drive that ricocheted off the Bulldogs pitcher to the shortstop, thru her legs into shallow left field allowing a runner from second to score but it was ruled after a long conference at the plate with all four umpires and both head coaches that runner had interfered with the shortstop and was thus ruled out and the inning over.

EU again put its leadoff runner on base in the seventh inning but McCauley worked out of the jam getting a fly out to left center field to end the threat with runners on the corners.

McCauley scattered nine hits over seven innings, striking out five, to improve to 10-4 on the year.
