DSU Drops Freedom Tourney Opener with 11-10 Loss to Eastern

West Lawn, PA (May 7, 2015) – The top seeded Bulldogs fell to the loser's bracket falling to fourth seeded Eastern University, 11-10, in a wild opening game of the Freedom Conference Baseball Tournament at Owls Field on Thursday afternoon.
 
The Bulldogs (25-16) will now play on Friday morning needing a win to stay alive in the tournament and will face the loser of the night game on Thursday between Misericordia and Manhattanville.
 
The game was relatively quiet thru the first six innings as DSU took a 2-0 lead with solo runs in the first and second innings on an RBI single from sophomore Mike Kacergis and RBI groundout from freshman Konner Schneider.
 
Eastern (16-22) tied the game at two with solo runs in the third and fourth innings and it remained a 2-2 game entering the bottom of the sixth inning
 
DeSales took a 4-2 lead on RBI singles from Kacergis and junior Colby Kulig but EU exploded in the top of the seventh inning scoring seven times, three of which were unearned to take a 9-4 lead.
 
The Bulldogs scratched out a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout from sophomore Tommy DePaul but gave it right back in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch as the Eagles took a 10-5 lead
 
DSU showed no quit scoring five times in the eighth to tie the game on an RBI single from freshman Conner Lafferty, an RBI single from sophomore Danny Licamara, and a three-RBI double from junior Alec Hardy tying the game at 10.
 
Eastern answered right away in the top of the ninth scoring a two out run on a base hit from Tommy Strazza and Andrew Check earned his third save of the year retiring the Bulldogs in order in the ninth to preserve the 11-10 win.
 
Kacergis, Kulig, and Licamara all had two hits in the loss to lead an 11-hit attack and junior Carlos Urena scored three runs.
 
Sophomore Andrew Schuler took the loss allowing the run in the ninth inning.
