Scott Coval enters his 15th season as the head coach at DeSales University. Coval, the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach in DSU history, boasts a 235-128 (.630) overall record.
Under Coval’s guidance the Bulldogs have qualified for the postseason 12 of his 14 years on the sideline. His team’s postseason list includes the 1995-96 NCAA Division III Tournament and the ECAC South Region Tournament in 1995, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 including an ECAC South Region Tournament championship in 2007. Coval has been named Freedom Conference Coach of the Year twice (2003 and 2004).
In 14 years with the Bulldogs, Coval’s teams have had a .500 or better record 13 times. Over the last five years, DSU has played in three Freedom Conference title games, been to five ECAC South Region Tournaments, won one ECAC South Region Tournament Championship and compiled a 105-38 (.743) overall record. In 2003-04 the Bulldogs set a school-record with 24 wins, 13 consecutive wins and 20-straight wins at home. DSU was ranked as high as #17 in the country during that year.
His on-court philosophy of team play and hard work has paved the way for Coval’s success. His teams rely on an up-tempo offense with an emphasis on sharing the ball. The Bulldogs also achieve in the classroom. Coval has coached 30 MAC All-Academic athletes and with the exception of one player, every senior who has played for Coval has graduated from DeSales University.
Prior to arriving in Center Valley, Coval was an assistant coach at Lafayette College for five years. He has also been an assistant at Penn State University and the College of William & Mary. Coval was a standout player at Whitehall High School where he was named 1st-Team All-State his senior year, led the team to the 1982 state championship, and scored over 1,800 points in his career. He continued his playing career at Division I William & Mary, where he was named team captain and MVP his senior year. He ended his playing career with six school records and graduated from William & Mary in 1986 with a degree in Business Management.
A member of the Lehigh Valley Basketball Hall of Fame and the Whitehall High School Hall of Fame, Coval is the director of the DeSales University basketball camp and helps with many other camps throughout the Eastern Pennsylvania and Western New Jersey areas.
Coval, who doubles as DeSales University’s Athletic Director, resides in Orefield, Pa., with his wife, Kaye, their two daughters, Keeley and Mia, and son Nicholas .
