Madison, NJ, (October 12, 2004) – Freshman Ashley Sparango (Salfordville, PA/Souderton) scored two goals leading the DeSales University field hockey team past FDU-Florham, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (6-5 overall) record their second win over a Freedom Conference team in as many tries this season. DSU will not join the Freedom Conference until the fall, 2005.
Sparango’s first marker came at the 8:03 mark of the first half as she scored off a rebound that bounced to her stick off the Devil’s keepers’ pads, giving DSU a 1-0 advantage that lasted through the first half. The eventual game-winner came 12 minutes into the second half on a penalty stroke. The tally was Sparango’s seventh of the season and her third game-winner.
FDU cut the lead to one goal with just 2:03 left on the clock but could not muster the tying goal and DSU prevailed, 2-1. Senior Shavonne Hannahoe (Shoemakersville, PA/Hamburg Area) totaled seven saves and freshman Amy Zoltek (Harleysville, PA/Lansdale Catholic) had a defensive save for the Bulldogs. FDU-Florham out-shot DeSales, 28-14, in the game.
DSU returns home on Thursday, October 14th as they host another future Freedom Conference foe, Wilkes University, at 4:00 pm.
