Center Valley, PA, (October 12, 2004) – The DeSales University volleyball team erased a 2-1 game deficit and an 8-1 point deficit in the fifth game to record a 3-2 (30-25, 25-30, 26-30, 33-31, 16-14) come from behind win over Freedom Conference foe King’s College on Tuesday evening in Billera Hall.
The win snaps a three-match losing streak for DeSales (7-16, 2-2 Freedom) and is the first Bulldog win over the Lady Monarchs (11-11, 0-5 Freedom) in the last seven meetings.
King’s had a 2-1 lead and twice had match point in the fourth game but could not find the court either time as DSU squeezed out a 33-31 win in the fourth game. In the fifth game, the Lady Monarchs jumped out to an 8-1 lead and led 9-3 before DSU rallied to take a 14-11 lead. King’s scored the next three points to tie at 14, but DSU scored the next two to win, 16-14, in the fifth and deciding game.
Leading the DSU attack was senior Michelle Piel (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) with 24 kills and 29 digs. Junior Colleen Arthur (Ridley Park, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) set another dig record as she posted 32 digs, breaking the old mark of 31 in a five-game match.
Freshman Allie Boyer (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) tallied 20 kills and 22 digs and freshman Gia Zimmerman (Blandon, PA/Reading Central Catholic) dished out 58 assists and 21 digs in the win. Sophomore Janna Sheckler (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) tallied 15 kills, five service aces and five blocks for the Bulldogs.
DeSales returns to action on Saturday as they host a tri-match with Cabrini College and Philadelphia University beginning at 10:00 am.
