Swarthmore, PA, (October 28, 2004) – The DeSales University field hockey team played its last regular season game on Thursday afternoon in its first-year as a varsity program and won its fourth straight game with a 3-2 win over Swarthmore College.
In what could be the Bulldogs (10-7 overall) last game of the season, DSU controlled play in the first half scoring all three goals en route to a 3-0 lead and held on in the second half for a 3-2 win over Swarthmore. DeSales now must wait 11 days to find out if they will be invited to the ECAC Tournament or if its season will close with a very successful 10-7 record in its first-ever year.
Sophomore Stephanie Milowicki (Hockessin, DE/St. Mark’s) started the scoring in the first half with her first goal of the season off an assist from fellow sophomore Bethany Hepner (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) on a penalty corner.
Freshman Ashley Sparango (Salfordville, PA/Souderton) continued the first half onslaught as she tallied two unassisted goals with the first coming just 4:04 after Milowicki’s and her second coming with just 1:58 left in the first half.
In the second half it was all Garnet Tide as Swarthmore out-shot DeSales 17-3 but senior Shavonne Hannahoe (Shoemakersville, PA/Hamburg Area) and the DSU defense refused to let the tying goal cross the line and the Bulldogs escaped with the 3-2 win. Swarthmore out-shot DeSales 26-11 in the game but Hannahoe countered with 20 saves, including 13 in the second half.
The ECAC Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament field will be announced on Monday, November 8th following the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on Sunday the 7th. Eight teams will be selected for the tournament which would begin on Wednesday, November 10th.
