Center Valley, PA, (October 6, 2004) – The DeSales University men’s soccer team fell just short in its upset bid of 20th ranked Arcadia University as the Bulldogs lost to the Scarlet Knights, 2-1, in overtime of a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (7-4 overall), who saw their four-game winning streak snapped in the loss, controlled nearly the entire first 85 minutes of the game and led 1-0 before the Scarlet Knights’ (8-1-3 overall) Dan McGarry beat the DSU keeper to a loose ball and tapped it over the keeper’s head and into the net at the 85:58 mark of the second half to tie the game at one and force overtime.

In the overtime period, each team had one chance to win the game before Arcadia earned a corner kick, served the ball in front of the net where it was knocked around and AU’s Justin Clark took control of the loose ball and shot it into the far corner for the game-winner.

Sophomore Randy Sturm (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) had given DSU the 1-0 lead at the 27:07 mark of the first half when he fired a pass from senior John Rennie (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) out of the air and into the right lower corner for his fifth goal of the season.

Freshman Brad Ferguson (Galloway, NJ/St. Joseph) made two saves for DeSales.  The Bulldogs out-shot Arcadia, 12-11, while the Scarlet Knights held a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.

DeSales returns to action on Saturday, October 9th as they host the defending Freedom Conference Champion Drew University Rangers in a rematch of last year’s championship game beginning at 2:00 pm.
