Rangers Hand Bulldogs First Conference Loss, 2-1

Center Valley, PA, (October 9, 2004) – The DeSales University men’s soccer team suffered its second consecutive defeat to a regionally ranked team this week as the Drew University Rangers handed the Bulldogs their first Freedom Conference loss, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.

The Rangers (7-4-1/2-1 Freedom) scored the first goal of the game at the 38:59 mark and never really looked back.  Mike Giacopelli recovered the rebound of Brett Reeder’s header shot and knocked it into the net for DU’s first goal which stood through the first half with Drew leading 1-0.

Junior Derek Swanner added the insurance goal just 7:51 into the second half as he blasted a loose ball from about 30 yards into the upper left corner of the net making it a two goal game.  DSU continued to work hard as senior John Rennie (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) cut the deficit to one goal at the 87:14 mark as he knocked a loose ball off a centering pass into the net for his seventh marker of the season, but DeSales could not find the net for the tying tally after that.

A pair of freshmen Brad Ferguson (Galloway, NJ/St. Joseph) and Dennis Kelly (York, PA/York Catholic) combined to make eight saves for the Bulldogs as Drew out-shot DeSales, 19-10, in the game.

DeSales now takes to the road as they begin a six-game road trip at Widener University on Wednesday in a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
