Haverford, PA, (September 15, 2004) – Sophomore Bethany Hepner (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) broke a 2-2 tie with just 1:47 left in the second overtime with a laser shot from the top of the circle to lift the DeSales University field hockey team past Haverford College, 3-2, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
The win is the second straight for the Bulldogs, who are competing in their first year of varsity field hockey. The Bulldogs played the first two minutes of the first overtime one man down due to a yellow card and nearly the entire second overtime a man down because of a second yellow card, but overcame the odds to defeat the Fords.
Freshman Ashley Sparango (Salfordville, PA/Souderton) scored twice in regulation as her first career marker came at the 30:19 mark and tied the game at one when she took a loose ball in front of the net and knocked it into the cage. Her second tally gave DSU a 2-1 lead at the 51:55 mark as she took a pass from Hepner and scored past the Haverford keeper.
Haverford tied the game at two forcing overtime with its second goal just six minutes after Sparango’s second score. Senior Shavonne Hannahoe (Shoemakersville, PA/Hamburg Area) made 11 saves for DeSales who out-shot the Fords, 31-21, in the contest.
DeSales has a week off before its next game as they host King’s College on Wednesday, September 22nd at 4:00 pm.
