Center Valley, PA, (January 19, 2005) – Four players scored in double digits but it was the defense that led the DeSales University women’s basketball team past Delaware Valley College, 67-49, in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.
The Bulldogs (12-3, 4-1 Freedom) held the Aggies to 22.8 percent shooting and forced 26 Delaware Valley College (8-6, 1-4 Freedom) turnovers in the game. DVC did out-rebound DeSales, 53-45, but it was not enough as the Aggies could not overcome its poor shooting.
The Aggies took an early 10-3 lead at the 13:43 mark of the first half before the DeSales defense took over. A 26-3 run over the next 12 minutes turned a nine-point deficit into a 16-point lead, 29-13, with 1:38 left to play in the first half. Senior Alyssa Antolick (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) totaled a team-high 11 points during the spurt and had 13 markers in the first half.
Leading by 18 with 10:33 left in the second half, DVC used a 14-5 run to cut the deficit to just nine points, 51-42, with 3:57 left. Five different Aggies scored during the run. After a DSU timeout, senior Jen Netwall (Allentown, PA/William Allen) converted a jumper followed by a lay-up that ignited a 10-1 run that pushed the lead back to 18 points, 61-43, and the Bulldogs never looked back.
Antolick finished with a game-high 19 points and added four assists. Netwall tallied 11 points and added three assists, while freshman Amanda Kuperavage (Port Carbon, PA/Nativity BVM) celebrated her first career start with her first career double-double totaling 10 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Jenn Osborne (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) led the charge off the bench with 11 points and senior Holly Liebl (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) contributed seven points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Bridget Golden led the Aggies with 16 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks as she became DVC’s all-time leader in career blocks in the loss.
DeSales returns to action on Saturday, January 22nd as they travel to the University of Scranton for a Freedom Conference game beginning at 1:00 pm.
