Women’s Hoops Wins Seventh Straight, 82-59, at Gwynedd-Mercy

Gwynedd-Valley, PA, (January 4, 2005) – The DeSales University women’s basketball team won its seventh straight game on Tuesday evening as they defeated Gwynedd-Mercy College, 82-59, in non-conference action.
 
        The Bulldogs, who are ranked 21st in the latest D3hoops.com national poll released today, improved to 8-1 with the win and made it 19-straight against the Griffins.  Gwynedd falls to 3-8 overall with the loss.  DeSales shot 46.3 percent from the field and forced 19 Griffin miscues in the win.  The Bulldogs also out-rebounded the Griffins 48-35 on the glass.
 
        DeSales wasted no time building a lead as they jumped out on top 13-0 over the first five minutes.  Seniors Alyssa Antolick (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) and Jen Netwall (Allentown, PA/William Allen) combined for all 13 points.  The Griffins cut the lead to as low as six points but the Bulldogs pushed the advantage back up to 13 points with one tick left in the first half on a lay-up by sophomore Jenn Osborne (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic).
 
        The lead continued to be 13 points early in the second half with 17:51 left before the Bulldogs put the game away with a 16-5 run to push the lead up to 24 points, 54-30, with 11:37 remaining.
 
        Antolick finished with a game-high 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting and added seven rebounds and six assists.  Netwall added 17 points, five assists and three steals and senior Holly Liebl (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Osborne totaled nine points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
 
        Sophomore Kirby Lutz (Easton, PA/Pen Argyl) added seven points and five rebounds off the bench and freshman Krista Gerlach (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford Township) had eight points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting night.
 
        The Griffins were led by Jillian Chiarantona who had a team-high 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from outside the arc.  Jackie Dougherty added her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

        DeSales returns to action on Friday as they travel to Lebanon Valley College to take on Alvernia College in the first round of LVC’s tournament at 7:00 pm.
