Annville, PA, (January 7, 2005) – The DeSales University women’s basketball team had its seven-game win streak snapped, 77-64, by Alvernia College in the first round of the Lebanon Valley College Tournament in Annville, PA on Friday evening.
The Bulldogs (8-2 overall) and ranked 21st in the latest D3hoops.com national poll also saw its 19-game winning streak in neutral site games snapped as the Crusaders (6-3 overall) built an 8-point halftime lead and never trailed in the second half to record the upset win.
Alvernia jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before DSU answered with a 12-2 run to take a 12-9 lead at the 12:38 mark of the first half. The Crusaders regained the lead and led by one, 16-15, with 9:27 left before a 7-0 run pushed the lead up to eight points at 23-15.
The Bulldogs answered with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 23 but a 13-4 Alvernia run made it a 9-point game, 36-27, and the Crusaders settled for the eight point, 38-30, halftime cushion. DSU shot just 29.6 percent from the field, while Alvernia canned 41.2 percent of its shot attempts.
In the second half, DeSales cut the lead to six points twice in the early stages before a 13-4 Crusader run gave them a 53-38 edge with 13:11 left and the Bulldogs never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Senior Holly Liebl (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds including a 13-of-16 effort from the charity stripe. Senior Alyssa Antolick (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) added 16 points, sophomore Jenn Osborne (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) tallied 13 points and eight rebounds and senior Jen Netwall (Allentown, PA/William Allen) totaled 10 markers in the loss.
Alvernia saw three players reach double digits including Tasheika Kennedy with 15 points, Erin McIntyre with 14 points and Rhealynn Davis with 11 points off the bench.
The loss advances DeSales to the consolation game of the LVC Tournament against Keystone College beginning at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
