Bethlehem, PA, (October 13, 2005) – The DeSales University women’s tennis team advanced to the Freedom Conference Championship match for the first time in school history defeating Wilkes University, 8-1, in the semifinals of the Freedom Conference playoffs on Thursday afternoon at Lehigh University.
Senior Laura LeVan (Orefield, PA/Parkland) and a trio of sophomores including Courtney McClurkin (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford), Liz Guidon (Northampton, PA/Bethelehem Catholic) and Mary Kate McElvaney (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) were each double winners to lead the DSU attack.
LeVan earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 1 singles spot while her doubles teammate, Guidon, won 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles spot just after the duo had teamed to win 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles position. McClurkin and McElvaney also won 8-4 at the No. 2 doubles and won their singles match in straight sets. McClurkin won 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot and McElvaney won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.
The Bulldogs await the winner of the other semifinal match between The University of Scranton and Drew University, which has yet to be played. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday and will be hosted at DeSales if the Rangers can upset the No. 1 seeded Lady Royals. If UofS wins, Scranton will host the championship match.
