Wyomissing, PA (October 22, 2005) – The DeSales University field hockey team suffered its third straight shutout loss, 3-0, at Alvernia College on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
Despite controlling play for most of the game and nearly the entire first half, DSU was once again unable to find the back of the cage. The Bulldogs (9-7 overall) were out-shot 18-14 for the game but held a 10-4 advantage in shots in the first half but saw themselves tied on the scoreboard 0-0. The Crusaders (13-3 overall) took control for most of the second half and scored three times to seal DSU’s fate.
The game remained scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the second half before Megan Novogratz scored the first of her two goals at the 47:15 mark to give AC a 1-0 lead. Becky Macchione scored her lone tally of the game at the 56:46 mark to make it 2-0 and Novogratz put the exclamation point on the win with just 2:04 left to play. Macchione assisted on the Novogratz’s second goal and Shayna Clark earned a helper on the first Novogratz goal.
Sophomore Amy Zoltek (Harleysville, PA/Lansdale Catholic) made nine saves in between the pipes and her counterpart, Carey Manzolilo, stopped 11 DSU shots to record the shutout.
DSU will try to break out of its recent slide on Tuesday, October 25th as they travel to Wilkes University for a Freedom Conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
