Wilkes-Barre, PA, (October 24, 2005) – The DeSales University men’s soccer recorded its second straight shutout blanking the King’s College Monarchs 4-0 in Freedom Conference action on the road Monday afternoon.
The win improves DeSales to 11-2-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the Freedom Conference setting up a showdown on Sunday at Lycoming College. A win for the Bulldogs over the Warriors on Sunday gives DSU home field advantage throughout the Freedom Conference playoffs, while a loss would likely put DeSales on the road in the post-season pending some other results. The loss drops the Monarchs to 5-10-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the Freedom Conference.
The Bulldogs scored twice in each half to record the conference win. Freshman German Reyes (Beach Lake, PA/Honesdale) scored his fourth tally of the season at the 14:46 mark off an assist from junior Randy Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) to start the scoring and Sturm added his 13th goal of the season at the 30 minute mark off an assist from his brother, freshman Dustin Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) to make it a 2-0 game heading into halftime.
In the second half, junior Westin Wolfenden (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) scored his first goal of the season on a deflected shot that took a crazy bounce and went over the head of the KC keeper. Freshman Tim Hall (Montclair, VA/Bishop Ireton) rounded out the scoring for DeSales scoring his second marker in as many games with a shot in the upper right corner.
Sophomore Rusty Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) and the DSU defense allowed no goals for the second straight game with Riedmiller making eight saves and recording his seventh shutout. Riedmiller is now one blanking short of tying the single-season record of eight shutouts.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, October 26th as they host Moravian College in a non-conference local battle beginning at 3:30 pm.
