Doylestown, PA (October 5, 2005) – Junior Bethany Hepner (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) scored twice and sophomore Ashley Sparango (Salfordville, PA/Souderton) scored once and added three assists to lead the DeSales University field hockey team past Delaware Valley College, 4-1, in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
The win improves the Bulldogs to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the Freedom Conference standings, while the loss drops the Aggies to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the Freedom standings.
Sophomore Casey Opdyke (Bath, PA/Northampton) got the scoring started for DeSales tallying her first career goal at the 27:37 mark of the first half off one of Sparango’s three assists to give DSU a 1-0 lead. Hepner added to the lead with the eventual game-winner with just 1:24 left on the first half clock off Sparango’s second assist and the Bulldogs enjoyed a 2-0 cushion at the half.
Hepner added her second of the game and her 11th of the season just 3:25 into the second half to make it a 3-0 Bulldog lead before the Aggies got on the board when Tiffany LaRosa scored to make it 3-1 at the 59:16 mark. Sparango finished off the scoring and provided the exclamation point just seven minutes later with her sixth marker of the year.
Sophomore Amy Zoltek (Harleysville, PA/Lansdale Catholic) made nine saves in the cage for DeSales as the Bulldogs out-shot DVC, 21-11, and held a slim 8-7 edge in penalty corners.
DeSales returns to action on Tuesday, October 11th when they travel to The University of Scranton for another Freedom Conference beginning at 4:00 pm.
