Virginia Beach, VA, (November 12, 2005) – The DeSales University men’s soccer team saw its 2005 season come to an end losing in the opening round of the 2005 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament to New Jersey City University, 3-0, at Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach, VA.
The Bulldogs finish the year with a 15-3-2 overall record, the second most wins in the program’s history. New Jersey City University improves to 17-6 overall and advances to the second round to take on York College on Sunday evening at 6:00 pm.
NJCU took control of the game early scoring just 2:12 into the game to take a 1-0 lead. The goal came on a corner kick that was never cleared and a free ball was gathered by the Gothic Knights and knocked into the net.
The game remained a one goal game throughout much of the first half before New Jersey exploded for two goals within five minutes of each other in the 39th and 43rd minute to take a commanding 3-0 lead into halftime. The second tally came off a throw-in as Chris Rosenthal took a pass into his body, turned around a Bulldog defender and fired a shot past a diving keeper and into the far corner. The third goal was a beautifully played thru ball that Juan Zuniga raced towards and shot past the DSU keeper.
NCJU out-shot DeSales 20-7 and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Rusty Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) did make four saves in the loss.
