Williamsport, PA, (February 19, 2005) – The DeSales University women’s basketball team used a 12-2 run late in the second half to record a 71-60 win over Lycoming College in the regular season Freedom Conference finale for both teams on Saturday evening in Lamade Gymnasium.
The win improves DeSales to 19-6 overall and 10-4 in the Freedom Conference as they earn the #3 seed in the Freedom Conference playoffs beginning on Wednesday. The Bulldogs will travel to King’s College in the first game of the playoffs with tip set for 6:00 pm. The loss ends the Lady Warriors regular season as they finish with a 7-17 overall mark and a 3-11 record in the Freedom.
DeSales took an early 14-point lead in the second half, 43-29, but Lycoming used a 10-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to cut DSU’s largest lead of the game down to four points, 43-29. The two teams traded baskets over the next eight minutes before the Lady Warriors got within one point, 53-52, on a lay-up from Rebecca Pugh.
The Bulldogs answered that spurt with its game-winning 12-2 run that started on a free throw from senior Julie Viercinski (West Wyoming, PA/Bishop Hoban). Senior Alyssa Antolick (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) followed with a jumper and senior Jen Netwall (Allentown, PA/William Allen) hit two free throws to make it 58-54.
Another jumper by Antolick pushed the lead to six points and Netwall canned a three-pointer to make the score 63-54 with 1:50 remaining. Senior Holly Liebl (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) concluded the spurt with two free throws increasing the margin to 11 points, 65-54, and DeSales cruised the rest of the way.
DeSales took control of the game early in the first half using a 16-1 run over the span of four and a half minutes to take a 13-point lead, 18-5, with just under 12 minutes left in the half. The Warriors chipped away at the lead, pulling within six points a few times before freshman Jenna Stampf (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) beat the halftime buzzer with a lay-up to give the Bulldogs a 37-29 lead at the half. Liebl and Antolick each scored 11 points in the opening half.
Liebl recorded her 11th double-double of the season as she tied her career-high with 23 points and added 12 rebounds. Antolick finished with 19 points, four assists, three steals and five blocks and sophomore Kirby Lutz (Easton, PA/Pen Argyl) finished with 13 points. Netwall scored all eight of her points over the last four minutes and totaled a game-high seven assists in the win.
Pugh came off the bench to score a game-high 24 points on 6-of-10 shooting from outside the arc. Senior Amy Herschman totaled 11 points in her last collegiate game and Jessica Snyder pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
