Madison, NJ, (February 2, 2005) – The DeSales University men’s basketball team cruised past Drew University, 86-58, in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday evening in Madison, NJ to sweep the season series between the two teams.
The win improves DeSales to 15-5 overall and 7-2 in the Freedom Conference and still tied for first place with King’s College who defeated Wilkes University tonight. The Bulldogs and Monarchs meet in Billera Hall this Saturday at 3:00 pm. The loss drops the Rangers to 2-18 overall and 0-9 in the Freedom Conference.
DSU scored the first 11 points of the game and used a 9-2 run midway through the half to take a 46-24 lead into the locker room and never looked back. Freshman Phil Stricker (Womelsdorf, PA/Conrad Weiser) scored 14 points in the opening half and the Bulldogs out-rebounded the Rangers, 22-9, over the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, Drew closed to within 15 points once but never got any closer as the Bulldogs shot 59.2 percent for the game and canned 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from beyond the three-point arc. DSU also out-rebounded Drew 42-23 for the game.
Stricker finished with a season-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting and also pulled down a season-high nine boards. Senior Michael Venafra (Belmont Hills, PA/Lower Merion) totaled 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting and fellow senior David Spadt (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) added 13 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Eddie Ohlson (Allentown, PA/Parkland) totaled a team-high six assists.
Sam Taub led Drew with a team-high 11 points in just 13 minutes of action. Leon Thomas and Mike Amalfie each added nine points in the loss.
DeSales returns to action on Saturday, February 5th as they host King’s College in a match-up of the two teams tied for first place in the Freedom Conference. The game is scheduled to be televised LIVE on Service Electric Cable TV Channel 2 locally and also broadcast Live by WGPA 1100 AM. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
