Slow Start Dooms Women’s Hoops again, Lose to King’s 73-58

Center Valley, PA, (February 5, 2005) – The DeSales University women’s basketball team started slow for the second straight game against King’s College and could not recover falling to the Lady Monarchs, 73-58, in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
 
        A few weeks ago, DSU (16-5, 7-3 Freedom) fell behind early to King’s (18-2, 9-1 Freedom) and never recovered in the second half getting as close as three points twice but never taking the lead.  Today’s game was more of the same as King’s started the game off strong taking a 12-3 lead and hitting its first six shots, while DeSales missed nine of its first 10 attempts and was never able to recover from the slow start.
 
        The Lady Monarchs first-half lead peaked at 11 points, 20-9, with 10:24 left before DeSales went on an 18-7 run to tie the game at 27.  DSU went cold once again, going scoreless over the last 3:56 of the half and King’s led 30-27 at the break.  King’s shot 50.0 percent (12-of-24) from the field in the first half, while the Bulldogs made just 25 percent (6-of-24) of its shot attempts.
 
        The lead stood at three points for the first three minutes of the half, 38-35, before King’s put the game away with a 19-4 run that pushed the lead to 18 points, 57-39.  Vienna Spitler started the spurt with seven straight points and Kristin Yeasted added six during the run.  DSU managed to cut the lead in half, at 59-50, but never got any closer.
 
        Yeasted totaled a game-high 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting and 10-of-13 from the charity stripe.  Beth Jordan added 12 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.  Spitler finished with nine points and six assists in the win.
 
        Senior Alyssa Antolick (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) totaled a team-high 19 points and fellow senior Holly Liebl (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the loss.  The loss snapped DSU's 12-game home winning streak dating back to last season.

        DeSales returns to action on Wednesday, February 9th as they travel to FDU-Florham for another Freedom Conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
