Center Valley, PA, (March 14, 2005) – The DeSales University baseball team traveled out west to Chandler, AZ during the school’s spring break last week and began its 2005 season by posting seven wins in nine game played across eight days in the Arizona sun.
The Bulldogs two losses came to Pitt-Bradford, 10-4, on Monday and 5-4 to Roger Williams University on Sunday. The Bulldogs defeated Roger Williams (4-2), Pitt-Bradford (8-2), Wesleyan (6-2), Arcadia (9-6), Juniata (3-1 and 11-9) and Lake Erie (14-1) during its trip.
Junior Matt Reppert (Allentown, PA/Dieruff) continued his mound mastery by returning home with a 2-0 record and a 0.60 ERA. He posted wins over Roger Williams and Juniata and pitched a complete-game in the win over Juniata allowing just one run. He struck out 11, allowed just 10 hits and walked only two in 15 innings of work. Opponents batted just .192 off him.
Also impressing on the mound were sophomore Jon Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) who posted two wins in relief and totaled 9.2 innings and a 2.79 ERA. Freshman JT Brotosky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) also pitched well in relief as he recorded a save and finished with a 2.57 ERA in seven innings of work. Junior Tony Pomanti (Malvern, PA/Devon Prep) also recorded a save during the trip.
At the plate, DeSales was led by senior Ian Hauze (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) who batted a team-high .484 with 15 hits, eight runs scored, five doubles and three RBI’s. Fellow senior Kyle Hoffman (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) also hit above .400 at .412. He totaled 14 hits, three doubles and a team-high eight RBI’s.
Senior Kyle Peters (Allentown, PA/Parkland) finished with a .393 average and five RBI’s and senior Nolan Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) batted .371 with a team-high 11 runs scored, two triples, five RBI’s and four stolen bases.
Sophomores Matt Lezinsky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and Luke Pisker (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) along with senior Dan Fratantoro (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) were the only Bulldogs to hit home runs during the week.
DeSales is scheduled to return to action on Sunday, March 20th as they host FDU-Florham in a Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at Noon.
