Offense Sputters, Miscues Lead to Loss to Delaware Valley

Freshman JT Brotosky was sensational in his first collegiate start allowing just four hits and one run with six strikeouts in a 2-1 loss to Delaware Valley College on Thursday.

Center Valley, PA, (March 31, 2005) – The DeSales University baseball team lost for the second time in two days on Thursday afternoon falling to Delaware Valley College, 2-1, in a Freedom Conference game at Butz Field.

The Bulldogs (9-4, 2-2 Freedom) offense sputtered all day long, managing just four hits overall, two of which were bunt singles and only one that made it out of the infield.  The Aggies (6-4, 3-0 Freedom) starting pitcher was brilliant in pitching a complete-game allowing just those four hits and one run, despite walking five and entering the game with a 24.00 ERA after being knocked around for 12 runs in his first start of the season.

Delaware Valley scored the eventual game-winner in the top of the ninth inning as Ryan Burza reached base on a slow rolling ground ball to the first baseman that was fielded cleanly but DSU’s pitcher was unable to get his foot on the first base bag and Burza was called safe for an infield hit.

After failing to move the runner along with a bunt, the next Aggie popped out to shortstop.  Burza stole second during the next at-bat and took advantage of a wild pitch and an error on the catcher to score what eventually became the winning run.  DSU retired the next two batters on strikeouts and DVC had taken a 2-1 lead with an infield hit, a stolen base, a wild pitch and one DeSales University error.

The Bulldogs went quietly in the bottom of the ninth inning with a strikeout, ground out to first base and a fly out to right field to end the game.

Freshman JT Brotosky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), the Cambridge Search Player of the Game, was sensational in his first collegiate start scattering four hits and one run over six innings with six strikeouts.  Junior Joe Chapman (Sellersville, PA/Pennrdige) was equally as impressive in three inning of relief allowing just two hits and one unearned run with four strikeouts before suffering the loss.

Senior Dan Fratantoro (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) had the lone RBI, a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow as they host Delaware Valley College again in a Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
