Bethlehem, PA, (March 5, 2005) – Senior Jen Netwall (Allentown, PA/William Allen) scored 23 points and was named the ECAC South Region Tournament Most Valuable Player as she led the DeSales University women’s basketball team past Moravian College, 67-45, in the championship game on Saturday afternoon in Johnston Hall.
The win marks the second straight year DeSales has taken home the ECAC South Region Tournament title and give the Bulldogs (23-7 overall) its fourth ECAC title overall. It also marks the eighth straight time that DeSales has beaten its local rival Moravian College (24-6 overall). Netwall earns MVP honors after she poured in 23 points on 5-of-9 shooting from outside the arc. She also dished out four assists and had six steals while playing all 40 minutes.
DeSales trailed just once in the game at 4-2 before using a 15-1 run over an eight minute span to take a 17-5 lead with 10:38 left in the opening half. The lead peaked at 17 points with 3:47 to go in the half before the Bulldogs settled for an 11-point cushion, 36-25, heading into the locker rooms. Senior Alyssa Antolick (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) led all scorers with 16 points in the first half.
The second-half was more DeSales as they opened the half on an 8-0 run including two three-pointers from Netwall and never really looked back. The Greyhounds were held scoreless over the first 5:19 of the second half and never got within single digits in the second half as they turned the ball over 29 times in the game and shot just 26.8 percent from the field. DeSales canned 40.6 percent of its shot attempts and were 6-of-11 (54.5 %) from outside the arc.
Antolick finished with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting to join Netwall as the only Bulldogs in double figures. Fellow senior Holly Liebl (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) totaled eight points, 11 rebounds and five steals, while freshman Jenna Stampf (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) had an excellent game off the bench totaling six points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Moravian was led by Kelly Applegate who scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. She was the lone Greyhound in double figures.
