DSU Baseball Beats Montclair State for First-Ever Time

Center Valley, PA, (April 12, 2005) – The hex of Montclair State is over for the DeSales University baseball team as the Bulldogs defeated the Red Hawks, 18-6, for the first-ever win over MSU in DeSales history on Tuesday afternoon at Butz Field.

The Bulldogs entered the game with an 0-12-1 record against Montclair which included a loss during the 2000 season in the NCAA Regional that saw DSU leading 10-0 only to have the game interrupted by a three-day rain delay and eventual lose, 14-11.  The win improves DeSales to 18-5 overall, while the Red Hawks drop to 8-11 overall this season.

Junior Tony Pomanti (Malvern, PA/Devon Prep) earned Cambridge Search Player of the Game honors as he made his first collegiate start for DeSales and earned the win going six strong innings scattering seven hits with six strikeouts and just two earned runs.

The Bulldogs took control of the game early and never really looked back.  After Montclair opened with a single run in the top of the first inning, DSU answered with four two-out runs in the bottom of the inning and added two more two-out runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead.  The flood gates opened in the fourth inning as the Bulldogs scored six times to take a 12-1 lead before posting the final 18-6 margin.

Several players had big days at the plate including freshman Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) with a 2-for-3 performance that included two runs, four RBI’s and two doubles.  Senior Ian Hauze (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-6 day that included three runs and three RBI’s.

Sophomore Matt Lezinsky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) was 2-for-7 with three runs, senior Nolan Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) was 3-for-4 with three runs, senior Kyle Hoffman (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) was 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs, senior Kyle Peters (Allentown, PA/Parkland) was 2-for-6 with two runs scored, senior Dan Fratantoro (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and junior Derek Miller (Green Lane, PA/Upper Perkiomen) was 1-for-3 with three RBI’s.
