Center Valley, PA (April 16, 2005) - The DeSales University softball team once again split a doubleheader this time with FDU-Florham in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon. DSU won the first game, 5-3, before the Devils rallied to win game two, 6-3.
The Bulldogs move to 10-15 overall and 3-5 in the Freedom with the split, while FDU moves to 12-14 overall and 5-5 in the Freedom standings.
In game one junior Danielle Jenson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) was the story as she earned the win going all seven innings scattering nine hits and allowing just three runs. In addition to earning the win on the mound she was 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI’s.
FDU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but DSU answered with two in the bottom of the inning and tacked on one more in the third and two in the fifth to secure the win. Senior Jennine Mara (Philadelphia, PA/John W. Hallahan) was 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and graduate student Valerie Valach (Huntingdon Valley, PA/St. Basil Academy) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
In game two, FDU rallied from down 3-2 with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to record the 6-3 win. Valach led the DSU offense with two hits, while senior Shavonne Hannahoe (Shoemakersville, PA/Hamburg Area), senior Kristen Matsen (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon) and sophomore Amanda Martinenza (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley) each had RBI’s in the game two loss.
Sophomore Elise Wilk (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) suffered the loss as she lasted 5.1 innings allowing nine hits and four earned runs along with four strikeouts.
DSU returns to action on Thursday, April 21st as they host Kean University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 pm.
