Wilkes-Barre, PA (April 23, 2005) – The DeSales University softball team earned a key split with King’s College in a road Freedom Conference doubleheader on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
DSU won the first game, 5-4, and lost the second one, 6-2. The Bulldogs move to 12-17 overall and 4-6 in the Freedom Conference standings, while the Monarchs improve to 26-8 overall and 9-3 in the Freedom. DeSales still has two Freedom Conference doubleheaders remaining with the University of Scranton (4/24) and Delaware Valley College (4/30).
In game one, sophomore Jennifer Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) earned the win as she went the distance scattering 11 hits and allowing just four earned runs with two strikeouts to record her first victory of the season. The Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 early but scored once in the fourth, twice in the fifth and twice in the sixth and held of a seventh inning Lady Monarch rally.
Graduate student Valerie Valach (Huntingdon Valley, PA/St. Basil Academy) was the hero at the plate going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two runs scored. Junior Jenna Rau (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) hit a solo home run and senior Jennine Mara (Philadelphia, PA/John W. Hallahan) and sophomore Jenn Murray (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) each had two hits in the game one win.
In game two, King’s broke a 2-1 game in the bottom of the fifth inning open with four runs and cruised to the 6-2 win. Cybularz suffered the loss as she went four innings allowing six hits and four runs. Junior Danielle Jenson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) had two of DSU’s three hits with an RBI in game two.
DeSales returns to action on Sunday, April 24th as they travel to The University of Scranton for another Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at Noon.
