Center Valley, PA (April 25, 2005) – The DeSales University softball team suffered a doubleheader split at The University of Scranton on Monday winning game one 12-2 and losing game two 1-0 at Tripp Park.
The loss hurts the Bulldogs chances of qualifying for the Freedom Conference playoffs as they fall to 13-18 overall and 5-7 in the Freedom standings. Scranton improves to 10-22 overall and 3-11 in the Freedom. DSU has a chance to tie for fourth place with several teams at 7-7 but will not know the outcome of the tiebreakers till all Freedom Conference games are complete this weekend.
In game one, the Bulldogs blitzed the Lady Royals starting pitching with 13 hits and 12 runs to earn a 10-run rule 12-2 win after five innings. Senior Jennine Mara (Philadelphia, PA/John W. Hallahan) and sophomore Jennifer Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) each hit solo home runs in the first inning to get the DeSales hit parade started.
Junior Danielle Jenson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) earned the win as she went the distance allowing seven hits and two runs to improve to 8-4 on the year. Mara finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs and three RBI’s. Graduate student Valerie Valach (Huntingdon Valley, PA/St. Basil Academy) went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI’s and sophomore Jenn Murray (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) and junior Jenna Rau (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) each had two hits in game one.
In game two, the Bulldogs bats went cold Scranton’s Tracy Granozio allowed just four hits and no runs to earn the complete-game shutout win. Granozio also had the game-winning RBI with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead UofS to a 1-0 win.
Murray had two of the four DeSales hits in game two. Sophomore Elise Wilk (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) was the hard-luck loser going 6.2 innings allowing six hits and one run.
DSU returns to action on Wednesday as they host Alvernia College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
