Center Valley, PA, (May 17, 2005) – The DeSales University baseball team returned the field for the first time in nine days to help prepare for them for the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional coming up this Thursday by recording two wins over St. Joseph’s College (NY), 3-2 and 12-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Butz Field.
The two victories improve DeSales to 33-8 overall and gives DSU a new school-record for wins in a season with 33, surpassing the previous mark of 32 set in 2002. The Golden Eagles of St. Joseph’s College fall to 26-16 overall as they prepare for this weekend’s ECAC Metro Region Tournament.
Cambridge Search Player of the Game honors go to junior Derek Miller (Green Lane, PA/Upper Perkiomen) in game one as he made a game saving catch in the top of the ninth to preserve the one run lead. With one out in the ninth the Golden Eagles batter hit a line drive to left centerfield that seemed destined to ricochet off the wall and go for a double and possibly a triple putting the tying run in scoring position, but out of nowhere came Miller who made an all out diving catch on the warning track and about two steps in front of the wall to record the second out.
In game two, Cambridge Search Player of the Game honors belong to the four pitchers; junior Jon Pallone (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee), junior Pete Quarracino (Kimberton, PA/Phoenixville), junior Tony Pomanti (Malvern, PA/Devon Prep) and sophomore Jon Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty). This quartet combined to throw a six-hit shutout and did not allow a hit over the final four innings.
In game one the Bulldogs scored the winning run in the bottom of the eight inning as sophomore Matt Lezinsky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) pinch ran for senior Kyle Hoffman (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) who singled to start the rally. After a sacrifice bunt was popped up and caught a throwing error enabled Lezinsky to scamper to third base with one out and he scored two pitches later on a wild pitch to give DSU a 3-2 lead.
Senior Ian Hauze (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) and sophomore Luke Pisker (Oley, PA/Oley) each had RBI hits in the game one win and seniors Kyle Peters (Allentown, PA/Parkland) and Dan Fratantoro (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) scored runs. Junior Joe Chapman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) earned the win in relief as he went four innings allowing four hits and one run to go along with four strikeouts. Freshman JT Brotosky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) also pitched well going the first five innings allowing just one run and striking out five.
In game two, DeSales jumped out early with four runs in the first, one in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth to take a commanding 10-0 lead. 13 different players recorded hits including junior Matt Burkhart (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) who went 3-for-4 with two RBI’s and two doubles.
Lezinsky and freshman Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) each tallied two hits and knocked in two runs, while Hauze, Fratantoro and fellow senior Kyle Hoffman (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) each scored twice in the win. Hauze also broke his own school-record with his 70th hit this season. He recorded 69 hits in 2003.
DeSales will now return to the field on Thursday, May 19th as they face Messiah College in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, PA.
