Peters Does it Again, DSU Rallies Past King’s into Freedom Title Game

Quakertown, PA, (May 7, 2005) – Senior Kyle Peters (Allentown, PA/Parkland) and the DeSales University baseball team rallied past King’s College, 9-3, in the winner’s bracket game on Saturday afternoon at Quakertown Memorial Park to advance to Sunday’s Freedom Conference Championship game beginning at Noon.

Many will say that being clutch is everything when it comes to sports and Kyle Peters, the Cambridge Search Player of the Game, has been just that for the Bulldogs (30-8 overall).  Through the first two games of the Freedom Conference Tournament he has two hits and both have been game-winning home runs late in the game.

In the opener on Friday, Peters hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning breaking a tie at six and on Saturday he capped off a four-run sixth inning with a two-run shot to right field breaking a tie at two.

The Bulldogs tacked on five more runs in the seventh inning to break the game open.  Senior Ian Hauze (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) had the big blast in the seventh, a three-run home run to left field that hit off the top left corner of the scoreboard.  Hauze finished with two hits, two runs scored and three RBI’s.  Senior Kyle Hoffman (Boyertown, PA/Boyetown) also had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

King’s had taken a 2-0 lead with single runs in the top of the first and fifth innings.  Senior Anthony Palmieri (Morgantown, PA/Upper Merion) improved to 8-0 this season as he went 7.1 innings scattering nine hits and allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts.  Rob Medlock (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) took the loss for the Monarchs.  Medlock lasted 5.1 innings allowing seven hits and four runs.

In the first game of the day, FDU-Florham eliminated Wilkes University (22-19-1 overall) from the tournament, defeating the Colonels, 9-1.  Freshman Larry Fabrizio (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) earned the win as he went eight innings allowing just one run and senior Thomas Calistri (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater) missed hitting for the cycle by a home run as he went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI’s.

DeSales will face FDU-Florham (24-13 overall) in the title game on Sunday as they defeated King’s College (24-14 overall), 12-6, in the championship game of the loser’s bracket on Saturday evening.  A five-run first inning led the Devils to the win as starter Ryan Flannery (Carlstadt, NJ/Becton Regional) earned the win pitching six innings allowing four runs and junior Kyle Sternadori (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) recorded the save with three innings of solid relief.  Offensively, Zach Ellis (Madison, NJ/Madison) and Manny Fernandes (Lodi, NJ/Lodi) each had three RBI’s.

The Bulldogs will be looking for its sixth straight Freedom Conference title tomorrow afternoon.  The win today marks the fourth time in the last five years that DeSales has won 30+ games and was also DSU’s ninth straight win.
