Quakertown, PA, (May 8, 2005) – The DeSales University baseball team won its sixth straight Freedom Conference Title on Sunday afternoon at Quakertown Memorial Park as the Bulldogs defeated FDU-Florham, 6-3, to also earn the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Senior Kyle Peters (Allentown, PA/Parkland) who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored today and hit game-winning home runs in each of the first two Bulldog wins, was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player as DeSales improves to 31-8 overall this season. FDU-Florham drops to 24-14 with the loss.
Sophomore Luke Pisker (Oley, PA/Oley) earned the win as he went 5.1 innings allowing just three hits and one earned run to go along with nine strikeouts as he improved to 4-1 on the season. Junior Joe Chapman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) recorded his first save of the season; retiring the only batter he faced to end the game.
DSU scored in both the second and third innings including two in the second on an RBI double from sophomore Matt Lezinsky (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and two in the third on an RBI single from senior Ian Hauze (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) and a sacrifice fly from senior Kyle Hoffman (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) to take a 4-0 lead.
Senior Dan Fratantoro (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) hit a solo home run to make it a 5-0 game before FDU got on the board with two runs in the sixth on RBI groundouts. DSU’s final run was scored in the bottom of the sixth as junior Derek Miller (Green Lane, PA/Upper Perkiomen) drew a bases loaded walk to make it 6-2 and DeSales held on for the 6-3 win.
The Bulldogs have now won 10-straight games and this senior class has recorded 121 wins in four years to become the winningest four-year class in DeSales baseball history. DSU will be making its sixth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament as the field will be announced a week from today and with its three straight wins this season in the Freedom Conference Tournament, DeSales now owns a 21-1 all-time record in the MAC/Freedom Conference post-season.
