Women’s Tennis Continues Win Streak, Beats Lycoming, 8-1

Sophomore Courtney McClurkin improved to 5-0 at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win on Sunday.
 
Williamsport, PA (September 11, 2005) – The DeSales University women’s tennis team has started the 2005 season in near perfection as they won its fifth straight match to start the year, beating Lycoming College, 8-1, in Freedom Conference action on Sunday afternoon.
 
        The Bulldogs are now 5-0 and have lost just two matches in their five contests.  The win also improves DSU to 2-0 in the Freedom Conference.  Sophomore Courtney McClurkin (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) was among the double winners on Sunday as she improves to 5-0 on the year and 19-0 all-time in singles, cruising 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
 
        McClurkin teamed with fellow sophomore Mary Kate McElvaney (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) to win at No. 2 doubles, 8-4, and McElvaney won at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0.  Sophomore Liz Guidon (Northampton, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) won at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-1) and teamed with senior Laura LeVan (Orefield, PA/Parkland) for an 8-5 win at the No. 1 doubles position.
 
        Junior Colleen Solomon (Catasauqua, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) and freshman Caitlin Gerlach (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford) each won their singles matches at Nos. 5 and 6 and teamed to win 8-1 at the No. 3 doubles spot.

         DSU returns to action on Saturday, September 17th when they travel to FDU-Florham for another Freedom Conference match beginning at 1:00 pm.
