Scranton, PA (September 13, 2005) – The DeSales University volleyball team recorded a major upset on Tuesday evening coming back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat The University of Scranton, 3-2, in the 2005 Freedom Conference opener for both teams.
DSU (5-5, 1-0 Freedom) fell behind early but rebounded to win the final three games to upset the Lady Royals (3-6, 0-1 Freedom) in the John J. Long Center. Scranton was the pre-season favorite to win the Freedom Conference receiving four first place votes, while the Bulldogs were picked to finish sixth among the seven teams. The win marks the first time since the 1997 season, a span of nine matches, that DSU has beaten UofS. During that nine-match losing streak, DeSales had lost by a score of 3-0 in eight of the nine matches.
Game scores were 25-30, 23-30, 30-26, 30-24, 15-12. Four different players recorded double digits kills for the Bulldogs including senior Kimberley Werner (Wescosville, PA/Emmaus) who had a team-high 17 kills. Junior Janna Sheckler (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) totaled 15 kills, freshman Joann Rivera (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) tallied 12 blasts and sophomore Allie Boyer (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) had 11 kills.
Senior Colleen Arthur (Ridley Park, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) led the defense with a team-high 17 digs, Rivera also had 17 digs, Boyer added 15 digs and sophomore Gia Zimmerman (Blandon, PA/Reading Central Catholic) totaled 11 digs. Freshman Sharon Uliana (Fleetwood, PA/Reading Central Catholic) finished with 42 assists and as a team DSU did not record a single service error in the entire match.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday as they travel back to The University of Scranton for its tournament on Friday and Saturday. DSU will take on Elizabethtown College and Mount Aloysius on Friday in pool competition.
