Madison, NJ (September 17, 2005) – The DeSales University men’s soccer team defeated the seven-time defending Freedom Conference Champion Drew University Rangers, 2-0, in the 2005 Freedom Conference opener for both teams in Madison, NJ on Saturday afternoon.
The win marks the first time in school history, a span of 13 games, that DeSales (5-1, 1-0 Freedom) has beaten Drew (4-1-1, 0-1 Freedom). Entering the game the Bulldogs had been 0-12 all-time vs. the Rangers. Drew has taken home the Freedom Conference Championship each of the last seven years, has been to the NCAA Tournament each of the last seven years and was the NCAA Division III National runners-up in 2003.
Junior Phil Yetter (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) scored the eventual game-winning goal on a rocket shot from about 20 yards out at the 23:16 mark of the first half assisted by sophomore Kyle Moore (Hockessin, DE/Salesianum).
DSU added the insurance marker at the 52:55 mark of the second half as freshman German Reyes (Beach Lake, PA/Honesdale) scored from the left post with the Ranger goalie out of the net. Fellow freshman Jimmy Casey (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) recorded an assist on the play.
Sophomore Rusty Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) made two saves in recording his third shutout of the season for the Bulldogs. DSU out-shot Drew, 7-6 in the game and each team had one corner kick.
DeSales returns to action on Wednesday, September 21st as they travel cross-town to play Muhlenberg College in a non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
