Center Valley, PA (September 21, 2005) – The DeSales University volleyball team does not want to make a habit of falling behind 2-0 but for the second straight conference match the Bulldogs erased a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 after defeating Lycoming College on Wednesday night in the 2005 home opener in Billera Hall.
The win is the first over the Warriors (2-9, 0-1 Freedom) since the 1996 season after Lycoming had won nine straight matches between the two schools. The game scores were 24-30, 24-30, 30-23, 30-22, 15-7. DeSales (7-8, 2-0 Freedom) snaps a three-match losing streak and wins its second straight Freedom Conference game after falling behind 2-0. The Bulldogs also fell behind 2-0 at the University of Scranton.
Leading the way once again was freshman sensation Joann Rivera (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) who totaled a team-high 19 kills and 17 digs in the win. Sophomore Gia Zimmerman (Blandon, PA/Reading Central Catholic) led the defense with 21 kills and freshman Sharon Uliana (Fleetwood, PA/Reading Central Catholic) filled the stat sheet with 39 helpers, six service aces and 12 digs.
Junior Janna Sheckler (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) added nine kills and two blocks, while sophomore Molly Motley (Hatfield, PA/Lansdale Catholic) and freshman Ashley Grube (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) each had eight kills in the win. Freshman Rachel Koury (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) also tallied 10 digs for DSU.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, September 27th as they travel to Delaware Valley College for another Freedom Conference match beginning at 7:00 pm.
