Center Valley, PA, (September 29, 2005) – The 22nd ranked DeSales University men’s soccer team started a new scoreless streak blanking the Gwynedd-Mercy College Griffins but the Bulldogs were also unable to find the back of the net settling for a 0-0 tie in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon.
The shutout is the sixth of the season for DeSales (7-1-1 overall) and the fifth for sophomore Rusty Riedmiller (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) who did not have to make a save to earn his fifth blanking of the year. A stingy Bulldog defense allowed just 12 shots with none of them being directed towards the goal.
Joe Schneider made four saves and perhaps none were bigger than mid-way thru the second half when freshman Jimmy Casey (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) broke free inside the box with what appeared to be a wide open shot with just Schneider in his path, but Schneider beat Casey to the ball and smothered the shot attempt and DSU’s best scoring chance of the day. DeSales attempted 19 shots for the game and held a 10-5 edge in corner kicks.
DSU returns to action on homecoming Saturday as they host Wilkes University in an important Freedom Conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
