Women’s Tennis Ties School-Record for Wins, Tops Arcadia 8-1

Senior Colleen Solomon won the final home match of her career, 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Center Valley, PA, (October 10, 2006) – The DeSales University women’s tennis team won its 12th match on Tuesday afternoon topping Arcadia University, 8-1, in non-conference action to tie the school-record for wins in a season.
 
        The Bulldogs (12-3 overall) tied the mark which was also accomplished in 1993 and 2005.  DSU has a chance to break the record on Saturday when they travel to Wilkes University for the start of the Freedom Conference playoffs.  DeSales enters as the #2 seed and will play The University of Scranton in the opening round on Saturday at 2:00 pm.  The championship match will be on Sunday beginning at 11:00 am featuring the two semifinal winners.  The Bulldogs are the defending Freedom Conference champions.
 
        Junior Courtney McClurkin (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) won her ninth straight match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 1 singles spot.  McClurking also teamed with junior Mary Kate McElvaney (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) to win 8-1 at No. 1 doubles and McElvaney won at the No. 2 singles spot, 6-0, 6-0.
 
        Junior Liz Guidon (Northampton, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 doubles spot and teamed with sophomore Caitlin Gerlach (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford) to win at No . 2 doubles, 8-4.
 
        Senior Colleen Solomon (Catasauqua, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) and freshman Nickie Brackbill (Paradise, PA/Pequea Valley) also recorded two wins on Saturday as Solomon won 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 4 singles spot, Brackbill won 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 6 singles spot and they teamed to win 8-3 at the No. 3 doubles spot.

          The Freedom Conference playoffs will be hosted by the #1 seed, Wilkes University, this weekend.  Match times are 11:00 am for the Wilkes/Drew match-up on Saturday and 2:00 pm for DeSales/Scranton.  If the weather is bad, the matches will be played indoors and will take place at 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm.  The championship match is slated for 11:00 am.
